Carmel to San Fran

We had high expectations for today and although it didn't go as scheduled, in the end, it was a great day! We started with breakfast in Carmel at a diners, drive-ins and dives restaurant, from scratch. Carmel was a sweet little town with a lot of cute shops. There was a wait so Kevin walked to the grocery Store while the girls finished getting ready in the parking lot. The breakfast was good for most of us, and then we headed in to the town of Carmel. That didn't go so well as there was not room for our big rig. After Kevin went into check for papas ice cream, which had all melted in the cooler the night before, we decided to call it quits on Carmel and moved on. We didn't want to go past Monterey also but when we drove through, again, we were too big for the town. So we left the area and decided to check out the redwoods in Henry Cowell State Park where there was a Roaring Camp steam engine train. We were very hesitant when we arrived as there was a hippie festival going on and the smell of patchouly was wafting through the air. Insert gag noise. Once we got past the festival, the steam engine site was cute. We waited for the train and took it up to the top of big bear mountain. It was pretty cool, but when we returned we were going to walk really quick through Henry Cowell state park. We got in and were mesmerized by the enormous redwoods and their various formations. There was also a doe and her fawn walking through the park. There were a lot of cool pictures and the deer were fun to watch. When we finally left, Kimber drove so Kevin could have a break. We returned to the PCH and with Kimber driving, we pulled off on many vistas to get out and explore the area. There were many beaches that had no entrance to them. Kevin tried to figure out a few but decided the reason they were unchartered beaches is because it was too dangerous to get to them. We finally found one as the sun was setting near San Francisco and we decided to get out and find a way down from the cliff to the beach. It was really beautiful and the waves were very strong, ultimately taking Colbie down as she had dared them to over and over again! It was really cool and a lot of fun. We were a little leery driving into San Francisco and to candlestick Park RV. The area looked abandoned with the exception of the homeless people sleeping on the side of the road and the rubble that was once candlestick Park. We felt a little better when we saw the gates at the RV park so we decided to stay (not that we had any other options!).
