Mimi brought a yummy cake with her...good grandma.

We just hit retread from a semi-truck on I-75 and dumped our "grey water" all over the interstate. Kevin saw a blue splash and was wondering what it was. So long deposit and holding tank, glad it's a rental. An Alabama guy actually pulled us over to tell us the covers ripped off. Who'd of thunk it, a nice Alabama fan?

Thursday

Mammoth Cave is an amazing sight to see. We started with a 2 hour/2 mile hike through cracks, ginormouse rooms 1/2 acre big, up 300 stairs, through tunnels and down steep hills, all in the dark, not total darkness, but dark.

The next tour we did had tighter spaces but only 1 mile long, still 2 hours. This is where we saw the stalagmites and stalagdites (sp?). The stairway in was another 300 or so, but down and about a foot wide. Jr Ranger Colbie walked the whole thing all by herself. The cool part is it is a nice 54*. Ahhhh

Too dark but this is Colbie squeezing through "Fat Man's Misery"

The natural and original entrance into the cave

It sells itself as a truely awesome cave system. It needs a little updating with some of those relief dollars and has Kentuckys finest running it. Haha just kidding, not really. There are so many amazing sights and stories associated with it, they could do a lot more. Enough said, it was still an unbelieveable sight. The campground was nice with everything we needed, although we missed our little crick. Cave City on the other hand had nothing to offer and more of Kentuckys finest so we left a night early to cut our drive time down for Friday. We are staying in Chattanooga, TN so we can get Mimi even earlier in Atlanta tomorrow.

Wednesday

Today was another "drive day". We took 40 West to Knoxville and it was a beautiful drive through the BOTTOM of the mountains. I taught Colbie and Callen how to get truckers to honk. They had as much fun with it as Wendy and I used to have!

Colbie got a hold of my phone and had fun with the camera...

Looking good...

We "mystery shopped" one of our BKs near Knoxville and then the Griswolds pulled our big rig right up to a PFChangs:)

After we left Knoxville it was deliverance all over again, this time in the valley. We went thru towns in TN and KY where we were the biggest house in town. It was an uneventful day, the RV Park is nice but we miss our crick at Moonshine. We are in a level site now so that is nice. Mammoth Cave tomorrow. I'll end with another bit of info...

If you have to duck tape your sewer hose in on the bumper of your RV...YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK!

Tuesday

Oh boy, what a day! Started with exploring our new campsite. Beautiful, right by the crick...

Mommy got up and made breakfast burritos (sausage, potatoes, egg and cheese in a tortilla), a Hilgers favorite, and the girls set the table.

Then we walked down to check in and check out the store...got us some goodies:)

I think we are starting to look like hillbillies. We got back to camp and left to find some waterfalls.

We learned one thing very quickly, you should not take a 33' RV to North Carolina to find waterfalls. The first two were a pull off and we didn't fit. The next one had a parking lot, but, cars only. We headed into Highlands to replenish our candy supply and get some lunch to go.

We went to Glenn Falls next, down a dirt road. I swear I remember there being a parking lot, nope. Dirt culdesac. We had to wait for done people to leave but thanks to Kevins driving skills we managed to park our rig. We hiked 45 min down and 45 min back and it was strenuous terrain. Miss Colbie walked the whole way all by herself thanks to her walking stick that Callen found her. We also found blackberries and picked a cup full, yummmy!

We got back and started the long, winding up and down trek to Sliding Rock. Colbie slept the whole way:). You haven't lived until you have feared for your life in a 33' RV on the edge of a cliff. We rounded one turn and actually hit the rock that was supposed to act as a guardrail I suppose. We made it to sliding rock and Kevin, Kayla and Callen loved it.

When we left Sliding Rock it was pretty late and things really got interesting. We decided to take Blue Ridge Parkway since the road we had been on was so narrow and winding. Big Mistake and we knew it right away. Of course there was no where to turn around. Up, up, up we went, into the clouds. The road was more narrow, doing switchbacks and NO GUARDRAILS. We were all sure we were going to die. Callen was puking, Kayla was curled in a ball sucking her thumb and Mommy and Daddy were all but crying. Kevin was gripping the wheel so bad his arm kept cramping. We were trying to think of who we could call to come drive us out of this nightmare and realized it was just us. At that point we had only gone 5 miles in about 40 min and thought about walking out. Anything to get us out of this monster on wheels on this suicidal road. We were actually above the clouds. We came on a "scenic overlook" that was actually flat and wide so we pulled in. We were to busy hugging the parking lot that we did not care you could see 4 states from there. Some lookie loos who couldn't have missed us coming in if they tried overheard our joy in being on the ground said this was nothing, what til it got dark and the clouds decend. Load em up!! Enough of Devils Courthouse. We passed other overlooks with names like Graveyard and Devils outlook.

When we had ourselves nearly frozen in fear Kayla did remind everyone the God was with us. We got off the lovely, scenic and guardrailless Blue Ridge Parkway once again saying it can't get worse. Well 215 wasn't worse but we had to drive in the middle of the road because the limbs were too low. Callen was sick and Kayla curled up on the floor all the way to Waynesville when we hit civilization. Callen said she is going to write a letter I have an idea..US gov, how bout some guardrails with that releif money and NCDOT, how bout trimming your trees? We made it back to the campsite and made smores to end the day.

Monday

Today has been a day of driving. We left Camp Hatteras this morning to see the northern outer banks. The Bodie Lighthouse was on the top of our list....

Our releif dollars at work. UNDER RENOVATION Anyway, things looked up when we drove through Pea Island Refuge, a bird sanctuary. This means beaches that aren't packed with people... who collect shells. So, on the shortest walk to the beach(thru the refuge) Kevin pulled over to let me check it out. He made me take a machete (???) and I wasnt arguing. I might have been swinging it around as I was walking, Kevin says Conan the Barbarian, I was going for Capt. Jack Sparrow in the spirit of Blackbeards stomping grounds. I was back in 10 minutes for buckets, it was COVERED in Skate cases (mermaids purse, sting Ray pods). Yah for me!! Kayla went back to help me on my second trip, sans machete. From there we ate at stack em high (yummy) and headed up to the Wright Brothers Memorial and Monument We thought of Camp and Papa

It was a LONG walk, and guess who couldn't make it without being carried?

We left the Outer Banks and headed west 500 miles. The girls have been pretty good on the long drive. We are headed to Moonshine Creek Campground in NC. The next two days will be hiking and waterfalls, we are excited for the cooler temperatures. Kevin is currently driving white knuckled up and down the Smokey Mountain Expressway announcing everytime his ears pop!

Sunday

We slept in a little and made pancakes in the rv this morning, our site is right on the edge of the dunes. We checked out the beach at Camp Hatteras, our campground and there were no shells, no waves and a lot of people. The sand is like quick sand, you sink in it when you walk. We unhooked, slid in and headed south to explore the Outer Banks. Our first stop was a surf shop where Kevin talked to the owner and got the insiders tip on the good waves and the girls got ice cream. Next, we stopped at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse which was very cool.

Colbie missed the height requirement by 1" and was so upset they made her a Jr. Ranger, ceremony and all. The picture above in Kevin and Colbie walking to the Lighthouse keepers house.

The lighthouse was about 250 steps up and amazing on top. We were hot and dizzy when we got back down.
We left the Lighthouse and headed for Hatteras Village. Hwy 12 is the road that goes through the Outer Banks and at times you can see, closely, the ocean and the sound at once. There are no chains, only local. We dropped Kevin at the northern point of the island, we were to come back in an hour. The girls and I went to a closeby village that had little shops. We were there about 40 minutes when I saw Kevin walking down the road with his surfboard...bleeding! Not bad, but the waves got the best of him and wore him out. I directed him to the handy dandy first aid kit and he got showered and cleaned up, good as new.

We ate dinner at Teach's Restaurant. Anyone know who Edward Teach was? Blackbeards real name:) Aaargh We headed back to the camp and stopped where the original lighthouse stood, they had to MOVE it because the ocean was getting too close. 2600 feet-fascinating. Here is our last stop on Cape Hatteras-of course we were playing in the gift shop:)

Tomorrow, we head for the mountains and cooler weather. Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
